Anyone who goes to a school with a low sports budget knows the struggle of not being able to participate in a sport that they may actually be interested in. My friend Savannah and I are both in one of these small schools, and as a project we are going to reintroduce cheer leading to our high school! Due to budget cuts a while back cheer was taken off of the list of sports our school has, and it is disappointing to have that option taken away. We are both going to be juniors, so by the time we are gone we want to have created a foundation for our program, and hope to promote health and fitness, increase confidence, and raise school spirit. Also...
More than 80 percent of cheerleaders have a grade point average of B or above...
these statistics are obviously good. We are hoping that all of our recruits show this statistic to be true, since they will have a team to guide them. Also, there are already other sports that people will be taking at the same time, so we would be recruiting people who may not have taken a sport, or have had a team experience. I hope to show them the positive side of having a team, they'll get to know their team mates better and learn how to interact and come out of their shells. I'm hoping this will be an experience that builds people up and helps them identify more of themselves and who they are and their own likes.
We do not yet have a coach, but my brother is a cheerleader at the University an hour and a half away. This is an open door to so many great opportunities for our team. I have great faith that he can talk a few of his team mates in to coming down to our school to have a cheer day camp to show our school the cool things that we can eventually teach them. Even if they cannot come down to our school I'm sure that with so many of us able to drive we could go up there and do it anyways. We have many awesome ideas for fundraisers, and can use those funds raised to take field trips to the gymnastics center in the nearest city.
